This antique German doll features a bisque socket head manufactured by Simon & Halbig for Heinrich Handwerck. The head is finely modeled with multi-stroke feathered eyebrows, painted eyelashes, and an open mouth revealing four inset porcelain teeth. The ears are pierced and fitted with pearl-style earrings. Blue glass sleep eyes are set into the head with a functioning mechanism and original eyelid wax. The doll is mounted to its original ball-jointed composition and wood body which features a red maker stamp on the right hip. She wears a long brunette curly wig and comes dressed in a white cotton lawn dress with inset lace panels, an eyelet-lace hem, and a gold-toned silk ribbon sash. The outfit is completed with a matching white slip, white knit socks, and bronze-toned metallic slippers with ribbon ties. The back of the head is incised Heinrich Handwerck Halbig 6 1/2. The torso is stamped Heinrich Handwerck Germany 0 1/2. Height: 31 inches. The bisque head appears in good condition. The sleep eyes are functional with typical age-related yellowing to the eyelid wax. The composition body exhibits expected age-related wear including some surface cracking and flaking to the original paint finish, primarily at the joints and extremities. The clothing is well-preserved with minor toning consistent with age.
