1889-S Morgan Silver Dollar, struck at the San Francisco Mint. This is a notably low-mintage issue from the Morgan Dollar series and an interesting date for collectors of classic U.S. silver dollars. Please review the photos for the exact condition, surfaces, strike, and overall appearance. The Morgan Dollar was designed by George T. Morgan and was first introduced in 1878. The obverse features Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap, while the reverse depicts a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings holding arrows and an olive branch. The 1889-S had a mintage of only 700,000 coins, making it one of the lowest-mintage Morgan Dollars of the 1880s. PCGS estimates approximately 70,000 examples survive in all grades, with considerably fewer in gem Mint State grades. The coin is composed of 90% silver and 10% copper, weighs 26.73 grams, and contains approximately 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver. The “S” mint mark identifies it as a San Francisco Mint issue. The 1889-S is also available in Prooflike (PL) and Deep Mirror Prooflike (DMPL) varieties, along with numerous recognized VAM die varieties.
