1883 Liberty Head V Nickel – No Cents, struck at the Philadelphia Mint. This is the first year of the Liberty Head Nickel series and the original “No Cents” design, making it an important and popular early U.S. nickel. Please review the photos for the exact condition, surfaces, strike, and overall appearance. The Liberty Head Nickel was designed by Charles E. Barber and replaced the Shield Nickel in 1883. The obverse features a left-facing Liberty Head surrounded by stars, while the reverse displays a large Roman numeral “V” within a wreath. The 1883 No Cents variety was struck early in the year before the word “CENTS” was added to the reverse later in 1883. The original design created confusion because the Roman numeral “V” could be interpreted as a $5 gold coin, leading to the famous “Racketeer Nickel” nickname and the addition of “CENTS.”
