1883 Shield Nickel, struck at the Philadelphia Mint. This is the final regular-issue year of the Shield Nickel series and a popular late-date issue for collectors of 19th-century U.S. coinage. Please review the photos for the exact condition, surfaces, strike, and overall appearance. The Shield Nickel was introduced in 1866 as the first U.S. five-cent coin made primarily of nickel. The obverse features a shield with the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” while the reverse displays a large Roman numeral “V” surrounded by stars and a wreath. The 1883 Shield Nickel had a mintage of 1,456,000 coins, making it one of the lowest-mintage regular issues of the series. Production of the Shield Nickel ended in 1883 as the U.S. Mint introduced the Liberty Head Nickel.
