1882 Shield Nickel with Doubled Motto & Date, struck at the Philadelphia Mint. This late-date Shield Nickel features collectible doubling in the lettering of the motto and the date, adding variety interest to an already historic 19th-century U.S. coin. Please review the photos for the exact areas of doubling, condition, surfaces, and overall appearance. The Shield Nickel was introduced in 1866 as the first U.S. five-cent coin made primarily of nickel. The obverse features a shield with the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” while the reverse displays a large Roman numeral “V” surrounded by stars and a wreath. The With No Rays reverse design was used beginning in 1867.
