Della Robbia Style Madonna & Child Wall Plaque

Updated August 18, 2026

Large rectangular polychrome glazed terracotta wall plaque modeled in high relief with a devotional Madonna and Child composition in the Italian Renaissance revival tradition. The seated Virgin wears a vivid yellow floral-patterned gown beneath a deep blue mantle and supports the Christ Child on her lap, while a rosary descends toward the lower edge. Above, a pair of cherubic angels emerges from stylized blue-and-yellow clouds. The relief is set against a creamy white glazed ground and rises from a richly modeled green base with geometric and foliate decoration. Its blue, yellow, green, and white palette and sculptural treatment are characteristic of the enduring Della Robbia-style tradition of glazed terracotta devotional works. Two integral wire loops at the upper edge provide for wall hanging. The plaque shows extensive age-related glaze crazing, surface soiling and discoloration, scattered abrasions and firing irregularities, along with edge and corner losses including a noticeable chip at the lower right corner, all consistent with age and display. No maker’s mark is visible in the supplied photographs, so the piece is best cataloged as Italian Della Robbia-style rather than attributed to specific workshop. Measures 18"H x 11.75"W x 5"D.
