Late 19th C. 18K Gold & Bone George E. Kemp Cane

Exceptional late 19th century gentleman’s cane featuring a richly patinated carved bone handle mounted with an ornate 18K gold collar and decorative gold overlay, the crook-form handle displaying natural stag/bone texture with deep contrasting coloration and applied flowing foliate gold embellishments, above a substantial engraved gold band inscribed “E. Kemp 722 Fifth Ave N.Y.”, referencing George E. Kemp, the prominent New York businessman whose Fifth Avenue residence was famously decorated in the 1880s by Louis C. Tiffany in one of Tiffany’s earliest and most important interior commissions; the gold mount is clearly stamped “18K” twice and additionally bears a hallmark depicting a lion with halo above, intersected by a vertical line with a horizontal crossbar beneath the halo and an “X,” as shown; the shaft is a dark, likely hardwood (appears bamboo-form carved) with natural nodes and warm brown figuring, terminating in a tapered tip. Condition shows honest age and use with surface scratches, light wear to the shaft finish, minor scuffs, and natural age patina to the bone and gold, consistent with period examples, while remaining structurally sound and highly presentable. A rare and historically significant cane with strong New York Gilded Age provenance appeal. Measures 35" Tall.
