Vintage Toledo Guardian 70 Duplex Grocery Scale

Large Toledo Guardian 70 Duplex commercial counter scale manufactured by the Toledo Scale Company of Toledo, Ohio. The Guardian 70 Duplex was introduced in 1948 as part of Toledo's post-World War II generation of retail weighing equipment and was intended for grocery stores, meat markets, produce counters, delicatessens, and similar businesses. Period Toledo advertising promoted the Guardian 70 for its improved reading accuracy, 70 price settings, and approximately 27% greater computing capacity. The University of Toledo's archival collection contains Guardian 70 instructions from 1948-1949 and a Toledo Guardian 70 parts catalog dated 1948, confirming the model's introduction period. The scale incorporates Toledo's famous "No Springs - Honest Weight" weighing system. That slogan dates to the early history of the company and referred to Toledo's use of a gravity/pendulum weighing mechanism rather than the tension springs commonly used in competing scales. Toledo built its reputation around the consistency and accuracy of this system, and the slogan became one of the company's best-known trademarks. This example retains the original Toledo Guardian Duplex identification plate on the front and the Toledo "No Springs Honest Weight" marking on the rear. Features include a large white weighing platform, streamlined white and black mid-century housing, adjustable leveling feet, operating controls at each end of the display, and the distinctive multi-window computing/readout assembly. Later Toledo literature for the Guardian 70 describes its duplex lens system, designed to magnify the weighing and computing charts for improved readability. Different Guardian 70 configurations and capacities were produced, so no specific capacity is represented here without a readable model/capacity plate. Of particular interest are the surviving Wyoming Department of Agriculture, Division of Weights and Measures "Tested & Approved" inspection decals on the scale. Multiple inspection decals remain present, providing tangible evidence that this example was inspected for commercial weighing use in Wyoming and adding excellent regional mercantile character. Condition shows wear consistent with age and commercial service, including scratches, scuffs, staining, finish wear, discoloration, and wear to the viewing windows and black trim. There is a prominent crack through the white outer housing on one end of the upper scale body, extending from the upper edge into the side of the housing, as clearly shown in the photographs. The Wyoming inspection decals exhibit age, fading, loss, and deterioration. The electrical cord is heavily aged and deteriorated. Operation, illumination, accuracy, and calibration have not been verified. Selling as-is.
