Challenge No. 2 cast-iron eyelet press manufactured by the Edward L. Sibley Manufacturing Company of Bennington, Vermont. Patented February 22, 1887, the Challenge press was designed to punch a hole and install a metal eyelet for securely fastening legal documents, business records, ledgers, and other heavy paper materials. Eyelet fasteners were favored in professional offices because they provided a durable, tamper-evident method of binding papers before staplers became commonplace. The larger No. 2 model followed the same general design as the company's desk-size No. 1 press but was intended for heavier work. This example retains its black japanned finish, gold decorative detailing, operating handle, original identification decal, and guarantee decal. The front label identifies it as the Challenge Eyelet Press No. 2 and bears a trademark registration date of May 7, 1907, placing its manufacture after that date. The press is mounted on a long wooden base and shows finish loss, scratches, surface oxidation, residue, and general wear consistent with age and use. No loose eyelets or additional dies are included. Operation has not been fully tested. Approx. overall dimensions are 32" long 22" high with the handle raised. A substantial example of early American office equipment suitable for antique tool, industrial, legal-office, or business-machine collections.
