Mid-century Aldeco mechanical household scale manufactured in the United States by the Algonquin Tool & Die Company for Allied Development Corporation of Chicago, Illinois. Designed for countertop kitchen use, the scale features a compact red-and-white enameled metal housing, an integrated weighing platform, an enclosed mechanical mechanism, and a curved front viewing window with a manually adjustable zero-setting control. The streamlined housing, contrasting color scheme, and script-style Aldeco branding reflect the domestic appliance design of the mid-20th century. Similar Aldeco household scales are generally identified in the collector market as mid-century kitchen or dietetic scales, although an exact production date for this example has not been confirmed. The underside is embossed "Aldeco Household Scale," "Made in U.S.A. by Algonquin Tool & Die Co. for Allied Development Corp., Chicago, Ill.," and "Patents Pending." The scale retains an appealing aged surface with scattered finish wear, scratches, oxidation, and signs of prior household use. The red body and original Aldeco script marking remain readily visible. Operation and weighing accuracy have not been tested. Approx. dimensions are 6" W 6" D 9" H. A distinctive example of mid-century American kitchen equipment suitable for a collection of household scales, period appliances, or retro kitchen dcor.
