Antique JAPANESE MORIAGE PINK FLORAL TRIPOD VASE

AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Standing 3-1/4" H and measuring approximately 3" across the body, this diminutive early 20th-century Japanese export porcelain vase has a rounded footed form, scalloped mouth and three short supports. The body is finished in a muted mauve-pink ground with a broad turquoise ornamental band encircling the center. Shaped reserves contain individually hand-painted bouquets of burgundy, violet, blue and orange flowers, framed by extensive raised white and russet enamel decoration. Rows of tiny applied dots, outlined scrollwork, pendant motifs and additional raised ornament across the shoulder create the dimensional surface commonly described as moriage. Small upright loop-form elements rise from the shoulder, while the three feet continue the applied ornamentation. The combination of hand-painted floral reserves, jewel-like raised enameling, asymmetrical Art Nouveau-influenced ornament and elaborate export decoration is characteristic of Japanese Nippon-era moriage porcelain made for Western markets during the early decades of the 20th century. Comparable Japanese examples are frequently cataloged as Nippon or Nippon-style three-footed moriage vases. No factory or country-of-origin mark is present; therefore, the vase is identified as Japanese export porcelain rather than assigned to a particular manufacturer.
