GLASS & SILVERPLATE SUGAR SHAKER CASTER MUFFINEER

AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Standing 6-1/2" H and measuring 3-1/4" in diameter across the flared base, this vintage table caster combines a clear molded glass body with a silverplate perforated cap. The glass is formed with a rounded melon-ribbed reservoir above a tall flared skirted base, creating a notably graceful and substantial profile. The removable silverplate cap has a bulbous form, pierced decoration and a neatly finished finial. Seven large dispensing holes are repeated around the cap. This form is commonly termed a sugar caster, sugar shaker or muffineer, intended for sprinkling fine granulated sugar over muffins, fruit, desserts and other foods at the table. Similar casters could also be used for cinnamon sugar or other finely ground dry seasonings, although sugar was the principal traditional use. Sugar casters developed as part of formal table service and were designed to distribute their contents more neatly and evenly than spooning from an open bowl. Glass bodies fitted with silver or silverplate pierced tops were produced in numerous forms during the late 19th and 20th centuries, ranging from elaborate Victorian examples to later revival tableware. No manufacturer’s mark or dependable pattern attribution has been established. CONDITION REPORT > Notably well preserved overall. The silverplate cap has minor unintrusive surface tarnish.
