1947 POIRIER & McLANE MILITARY SOLIDER FOOT LOCKER

AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Measuring 32" W x 16" D x 13" H, this dated postwar military foot locker is constructed of olive-drab painted sheet steel with riveted edge reinforcement, fitted metal corners and a full-width hinged lid. An oval manufacturer’s plate affixed to the underside reads POIRIER & McLANE CORP. ~ 1947 ~ FALCONER, N.Y. The front is fitted with two functional draw latches and a central locking hasp. The metal loop intended to receive a padlock when the hasp is closed is damaged. Stable folding metal carrying handles are mounted to the front and both ends. The interior retains its olive-drab painted finish and provides a large open storage compartment without a removable tray. Faded period stenciling to one end appears to read PORTREX 143. PORTREX was the abbreviated name used for the large interservice Puerto Rico Exercise, an amphibious military exercise conducted at Vieques, Puerto Rico, from late 1949 into early 1950. The surviving stencil suggests that this 1947 locker may have been assigned to personnel or equipment associated with that operation. Poirier & McLane Corporation maintained operations in Falconer, New York, and manufactured these standardized reinforced metal lockers during the immediate postwar period. Surviving examples carrying the same dated Falconer plate are consistently found in the familiar 32" x 16" military foot-locker format. The firm later became better documented as an engineering and heavy-construction contractor operating from New York, but the dated plate on this example directly records the Falconer manufacturing operation. CONDITION REPORT > The two front fold-down draw latches are incomplete. The padlock ring attached to the central locking hasp is damaged. General surface wear includes scattered scratches, scuffs, paint loss, oxidation and fading relative to age and prior military service.
