NO SHIPPING ~ LOCAL PICKUP ONLY > A vintage group of American Metlox Poppytrail pottery in the Sculptured Grape pattern, produced in California beginning during the 1960s. The pattern combines dimensional clusters of blue grapes, layered green leaves, curling vine tendrils and hand-painted accents against a warm antique-white pottery body. The large covered casserole is particularly decorative, featuring sculptural branch-form handles and a raised grapevine finial incorporated into the lid. GROUP INCLUDES: One large oval serving platter — chipped along the rim One salad plate One rimmed soup bowl Thirteen saucers — at least one saucer is chipped One coffee or tea cup One large covered casserole with lid — casserole body has a fracture extending downward from the upper edge Metlox was among the leading names of the 20th-century California pottery industry. Established in Manhattan Beach, California, in 1927, the company name was derived from “metal oxide,” referencing the compounds used in ceramic glazes and colors. Metlox introduced the Poppytrail dinnerware line during the 1930s, developing a reputation for colorful, casual tableware with distinctly Californian styling. Following the closure of Vernon Kilns in 1958, Metlox acquired many of that company’s molds and continued producing dinnerware under several related names, including Poppytrail, Vernon Ware and California Provincial. The Sculptured Grape pattern was introduced in 1963 and remained in production into the 1980s. Its raised fruit-and-foliage decoration reflects the popularity of dimensional, nature-inspired tableware during the mid-20th century. Some pieces are factory marked while others are unmarked, a mixture commonly encountered among Metlox services due to differences in form, production period and available marking space. CONDITION REPORT > Damaged pieces are individually identified within the inventory above. Additional scattered surface wear, utensil marks and signs of previous use may be present throughout the group.
