NO SHIPPING ~ LOCAL PICKUP ONLY > An antique wood sewing rocker standing 31" tall with a seat measuring 17" wide across the front and rockers measuring 26" long. The compact armless form is traditionally associated with sewing, nursing and fireside rockers, allowing close movement of the arms without interference from chair arms. The tall shaped back is the distinguishing feature, framed by slender curved uprights beneath a serpentine crest rail. A carved foliate flourish crowns the center above a fluted and scrolled transition leading into the elongated shield-form back splat. A shaped lower cross rail echoes the curved outline of the crest, giving the chair a more formal appearance than a plainly constructed utility rocker. The seat frame has a bowed front rail and fitted woven cane panel. Curved front legs descend to the long wood rockers, joined by turned side and rear stretchers. The carved crest, shield-form splat, serpentine lines and cane seat reflect late Victorian and early 20th-century revival styling. The damaged cane may be professionally rewoven. As a simpler alternative, the opening could be fitted with a shaped plywood seat panel and covered with fabric or upholstery, allowing the rocker to return to practical use while retaining the carved back and original wood frame. CONDITION REPORT > A restoration project ~ The woven cane seat has substantial breaks and losses and cannot presently support normal use. Several frame joints require tightening and regluing to stabilize the structure. The wood finish exhibits broad wear, fading, scratches, abrasions and scattered small losses from age and use. The carved back remains visually appealing and gives the chair strong restoration potential.
