60s MURRAY JUVENILE CRUISER BIKE PERMACO 3238 SEAT

NO SHIPPING ~ LOCAL PICKUP ONLY > A vintage red single-speed juvenile middleweight cruiser bicycle measuring 54" long with 16" diameter wheels and an adjustable saddle currently standing 26" from the ground. Both tires are flat. The bicycle appears to have been manufactured by Murray Ohio Manufacturing Company during the mid-1960s, although the original retail badge and exact model designation are no longer present. The compact frame was designed to reproduce the space-age styling of Murray’s larger adult middleweight cruisers. A broad teardrop-shaped faux tank section is incorporated between the upper frame bars, while the rear frame structure flows around the seat post and supports a long pressed-metal luggage carrier. Additional Murray-associated features include the cloverleaf-pattern front chainwheel and the stamped rear-fender housing surrounding the round red reflector. Murray produced bicycles for Sears, Western Auto and numerous regional retailers, so examples of this form may carry several different brand names or minimal retailer badging. Murray’s 1963 catalog confirms that the company offered a broad line of middleweight and juvenile bicycles during this period. The bicycle has swept-back handlebars with light-colored grips, a white padded saddle, full metal fenders, enclosed chainguard, rubber-block pedals, rear coaster-style hub and a kickstand. The saddle is marked ~ PERMACO ~ 3238 ~ and is supported by exposed rear coil springs. Permaco was a component manufacturer, so the marked saddle adds useful period detail but does not independently establish the bicycle’s maker. The combination of the faux-tank frame, integrated rear carrier lines, full fenders, whitewall tires and juvenile proportions suggests a Murray-built 20-inch-class cruiser from approximately the mid-1960s. The measured wheel diameter of 16" appears to have been taken across the rim or visible wheel rather than from the original tire-size designation commonly used in bicycle catalogs. CONDITION REPORT > Both tires are flat ~ Extensive oxidation is noted across the handlebars, fenders, wheel rims, spokes, chain, crank and other exposed metal components. The grips and Permaco saddle exhibit discoloration and wear. The red painted frame shows scratches, fading, finish loss and scattered marks. Mechanical operation has not been tested, and the condition of the coaster brake, bearings, chain and other moving components is unknown. Offered as found for restoration, display or parts.
