Pair BEVOLO French Quarter COPPER WALL LANTERNS

SHIPPING AVAILABLE (MUST BE SHIPPED IN SEPARATE CARTONS) or LOCAL PICKUP > A matched pair of vintage Bevolo French Quarter® electric wall lanterns, identified by attached nameplates at the lower edge of the front panel. Each stands approximately 20" tall and measuring 12" × 12" across the lantern body. Each fixture is supported by the maker’s square flat-iron Original Bracket, extending approximately 2.75" from the wall. Manufactured by Bevolo Gas & Electric Lights of New Orleans, Louisiana, these represent the company’s original French Quarter® lantern on the Original Bracket. Bevolo was established in the New Orleans French Quarter in 1945 by Andrew Bevolo Sr. The French Quarter design was developed during the 1940s by Bevolo and noted Louisiana architect A. Hays Town. Bevolo credits the strength of the design to hand-riveted aviation-style construction rather than brittle soldered joints. The model became closely associated with historic New Orleans architecture and remains a signature Bevolo form. Each lantern is constructed from hand-formed and hand-riveted copper with a tapered four-sided body, clear glass panels, sloping glazed roof, cylindrical ventilated stack and broad domed cap. Bevolo notes that the Original French Quarter lantern incorporates 97 rivets. The copper has developed warm brown, muted golden and scattered green verdigris tones associated with naturally aged exterior copper. The square Original Brackets appear to be painted or powder-coated steel, consistent with Bevolo’s standard bracket construction. A hinged and latched front panel provides access to the interior. Each electric fixture is fitted with a medium-base socket and gallery designed to accept a traditional clear glass chimney. The arrangement typically utilizes a standard-base flame-shaped bulb to reproduce the appearance of earlier candle, oil or gas illumination. The pair was reportedly acquired during the late 1960s or 1970s and are now removed from the original wall installation. Electrical wiring remains at the rear of each mounting plate. CONDITION REPORT > As discovered, not cleaned or altered. Substantial vintage examples retaining an attractive naturally aged copper patina ~ Scattered oxidation, verdigris, surface marks, finish variation and weathering are noted throughout. Professional inspection and installation by a qualified electrician are recommended before use.
