NO SHIPPING ~ LOCAL PICKUP ONLY > A remarkably well-preserved late Victorian marble-top chest measuring approximately 40" wide × 17" deep × 32" tall overall. The substantial case is fitted with three full-width drawers beneath a removable white marble slab displaying soft gray veining and gently rounded projecting edges. Each drawer front is designed with two applied, deeply molded rectangular panels, creating the visual effect of six smaller drawers while preserving the generous storage capacity of three wide interiors. The drawers retain six brass bail pulls with shaped pierced backplates, together with individual central keyholes. All three locks are present, though no key was available at the time of listing. The architectural case features broad upright corner stiles, recessed rectangular side panels, horizontal rail divisions, and a shaped lower apron terminating in bracket-style feet. The restrained rectangular form and marble top show Louis Philippe influence, while the deeply molded double-panel drawer fronts reflect the Renaissance Revival vocabulary widely used by American cabinetmakers during the late Victorian period. The chest most likely dates from approximately 1870 to 1890. The warm reddish-brown finish reveals attractive natural grain throughout the drawer fronts and paneled sides. The wood species has not been conclusively established from the photographs, though walnut was widely used for comparable American Victorian marble-top chests of this period. Originally intended as a bedroom chest or dresser, the compact marble-top form also lends itself well to use as a hall chest, linen cabinet, serving piece, bathroom vanity conversion, or decorative storage cabinet. The marble provides an especially attractive and practical surface for a bedroom, entry hall, dining room, or traditional interior. CONDITION REPORT > As discovered, not cleaned or altered ~ Structurally sound and remarkably well preserved for age ~ Perhaps typical and minor elements relative to age, use and materials.
