Antique EASTLAKE OFFICE CHAIR ~ CANE BOTTOM & BACK

NO SHIPPING ~ LOCAL PICKUP ONLY > An antique Eastlake period walnut swivel office or library chair presently measuring approximately 46" tall to the back × 21" wide × 20" deep across the seat, with the seat positioned approximately 16" above the floor. The threaded swivel mechanism permits an estimated 1" to 2" of height adjustment by rotating the chair clockwise or counterclockwise. Measurements reflect the stable position shown in the photographs. The tall back is fitted with a tilting or reclining mechanism, allowing the back and seat assembly to move with the sitter rather than remaining rigidly upright. The broad seat and back retain woven cane panels within substantial hardwood frames. Shaped open arms rise from curved supports, while the long back posts and arm fronts display narrow vertical reeding. The chair rests upon a four-legged pedestal base fitted with rolling casters and a central metal swivel and tilt mechanism. The elaborate crown features a central carved floral rosette flanked by incised foliate panels, a small notched crest, and a pierced decorative frieze beneath the crown that is not clearly visible from every viewing angle. Additional incised ornamentation appears along the lower back rail. Several applied and carved decorative elements are intentionally lighter in tone, creating contrast against the warm golden brown hardwood finish. The angular construction, reeded uprights, incised naturalistic carving, pierced geometric ornament, caned panels, adjustable height, swivel action, and tilting back are characteristic of American Eastlake and late Victorian office furniture. Comparable caned swivel desk chairs with cast-metal adjustment mechanisms are generally associated with the final decades of the nineteenth century, placing this example most likely around 1880 to 1890. CONDITION REPORT > Remarkably well preserved for age, likely refinished and caned in the past. The hardwood finish remains attractive and well maintained, retaining a warm golden-brown tone with naturally lighter applied and carved decorative elements. The woven cane seat and back are intact and present especially well, with no overt breakage or significant loss observed. The chair stands securely at the present height, swivels, raises and lowers through the threaded mechanism, and the back tilts properly. All rolling casters remain present. No maker’s label or identifying mark has been located.
