VICTORIAN ARCHITECTURAL CAST IRON HEAT REGISTER

AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > As discovered, not cleaned or altered, an ornate cast iron wall heat register measuring approximately 14" tall × 10" wide × 2" deep through the recessed rear housing. The arched, or “tombstone,” form features elaborate openwork with flowers, leafy vines, scrolling tendrils, geometric borders, and a prominent central floral motif. The decorative front grille is backed by a series of vertical iron damper plates. A small horizontal roller control positioned along the lower front operates the concealed mechanism, moving the rear plates to open or restrict the flow of heated air. This confirms the piece as a functional architectural heat register rather than a purely decorative wall grate. Comparable arched cast iron registers with adjustable louvers are associated with late nineteenth and early twentieth century hot-air heating systems. The register retains layers of aged blue-gray paint over earlier dark surfaces, with widespread oxidation, rust, paint loss, and accumulated surface deposits. The heavy rear housing, internal linkage, vertical closures, decorative grille, and operating control remain present. No maker’s name or foundry mark has been located. Well suited for restoration within a Victorian or early twentieth century residence, the register also offers strong decorative appeal as architectural element, wall art, a garden ornament, cabinet insert, or creative repurposing project. CONDITION REPORT > As discovered, not cleaned or altered ~ Expect a degree of oxidation, rust, flaking paint, surface buildup, and age-related wear overall, as exhibited in the photographs. The lower roller control the rear vent closures and adjusts rather easily.
