15" MCCARTY POTTERY COBALT BLUE DRIP GLAZE PLANTER

NO SHIPPING ~ LOCAL PICKUP ONLY > Despite a rim chip, as shown in the images offered, a striking, large and exceptionally substantial McCarty art pottery planter measuring approximately 15.5" tall × 10.75" in diameter across the top rim and weighing an impressive 15.5 pounds. The planter is finished in a rich cobalt blue drip glaze, with darker pooling around the upper rim and irregular vertical runs descending across a smoky blue and gray ground. The flowing glaze contrasts strongly with the horizontal ribbed surface, creating considerable depth and movement throughout the substantial form. Visible throwing lines continue through the interior and reinforce the handmade studio pottery character. The tall cylindrical form narrows gently toward the rounded base and displays pronounced horizontal ribbing consistent with an apparently wheel-thrown vessel. The recessed underside bears an incised McCarty signature. The planter is finished in a rich cobalt blue glaze with darker pooling around the upper rim, smoky blue and gray passages across the body, and freely flowing vertical glaze movement that contrasts with the horizontal ribbed surface. Visible throwing lines continue through the interior, reinforcing the handmade studio pottery character. McCarty Pottery was established in Merigold, Mississippi, in 1954 by Lee and Pup McCarty. Working from a converted mule barn in the Mississippi Delta, the McCartys developed a distinctive body of American art pottery recognized for hand-thrown forms, expressive glazing, substantial construction, and strong regional identity. Large architectural vessels of this scale offer considerably more visual presence than the smaller decorative forms most often encountered. The planter provides a commanding display for a large specimen plant, indoor tree, architectural floral arrangement, hearth setting, conservatory, garden room, entryway, or independent presentation as sculptural Mississippi art pottery.
