A decorative chess set of Mesoamerican design, comprising a square board and thirty-two pieces. The set is constructed from a cast composite material, using a bone-coloured faux-stone resin and a crushed green-coloured stone resin. The square board features a checkerboard pattern of sixty-four squares, each incised with glyphs. When viewed as a whole, the patterns form a stylised representation of the Aztec Sun Stone calendar, with the central four squares depicting a solar deity face. The board is finished with a tiered, malachite-green border featuring incised scrollwork. The two opposing sets of pieces are rendered in contrasting bone-white and malachite-green. The figures are modelled after historical Mesoamerican archetypes, including kings and queens in ceremonial regalia with feathered headdresses, bishops with stylised headdresses, knights featuring animal motifs, rooks shaped as stepped temple pyramids, and pawns as seated figures. Several pieces feature the incised mark MEXICO to the front of the base. Dimensions: Board approx. W 34.3 cm x D 34.3 cm (measured against a ruler) King approx. H 8.3 cm (measured against a ruler). Condition: The set is in overall good condition, showing light surface wear and minor dust accumulation in the recessed areas consistent with age and display. Free of visible chips or structural repairs.
