Browning Auto-5 (A-5) Semi-Automatic Shotgun — FN Belgian Manufacture 1939 Era Pre-War Belgium Browning A5 This is a vintage Browning Auto-5 semi-automatic shotgun, manufactured by Fabrique Nationale (FN) in Belgium and imported/distributed by Browning Arms Company, St. Louis, MO, as marked on the left side of the receiver. The Auto-5's distinctive humpback receiver profile and long-recoil operating system make it one of the most recognizable sporting shotguns of the 20th century. Features: Blued steel receiver with factory scroll engraving on both sides and the "Browning Trade Mark" logo with the Browning family crest medallion on the left panel FN oval proof mark and matching serial number stamped on the receiver and barrel Full-length matted rib along the top of the barrel for improved sighting Barrel marked "12 SPECIAL STEEL," indicating 12-gauge chambering Checkered walnut stock and forend with a classic straight/semi-pistol grip profile and diamond-point checkering pattern Steel grip cap engraved "Browning Automatic" with the FN monogram medallion Magazine cap with knurled edge at the forend tip Blued finish throughout, showing an attractive plum/case-color patina typical of guns from this era Condition Notes: Overall finish shows honest handling wear consistent with age and use — thinning/fading of blue on the barrel and receiver, most notably along the top rib and receiver flats Stock and forend show scattered handling marks, light scuffs, and finish wear on the buttstock A visible crack is present in the wood at the junction of the pistol grip and receiver tang (see close-up/circled photo
