This oil on stretched canvas by Mitsuzo Shimizu (Japanese-American, 1905-1986) depicts an atmospheric forest landscape in a tonalist style. The composition features a gentle stream winding through a dense wood, with dramatic light filtering through the tree canopy. The painting is signed M. Shimizu in the lower left corner. It is presented in a multi-tiered silver-toned ornate frame with a wide off-white linen liner and a thin silver-toned inner fillet. A metal nameplate reading SHIMIZU is attached to the bottom center of the liner. Approximately 34 x 30 inches (frame).The painting is in good overall condition with no visible craquelure or paint loss. There is a light accumulation of surface dirt consistent with age. The off-white linen liner shows minor staining and light discoloration. The silver-toned frame exhibits light wear to the edges and corners.
