Title: Bouquet of Mixed Flowers in a Dark Vase on a Golden Ground Technique: Pastel on paper Measures: 10 x 8 inches (25.4 x 20.3 cm) Year: Undated Condition: Appears in generally good visual condition based on the photographs supplied, with rich, saturated coloration and thickly applied, raised strokes throughout the bouquet and tabletop. Some mottled darker areas are visible in the background along the left and right edges. No significant tears, losses, or creases are apparent in the available images. Minor surface irregularities, light handling marks, and age-related wear may be present. Presented in a reddish-brown wooden frame with a burl-effect finish and a dark inner lip, showing minor surface wear. Not examined out of the frame. Condition is described from the photographs supplied. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the condition description. Provenance: Transferred within the private collection of the Byrne family of Dublin from one generation to the next. Visual Description: A lush floral still life in horizontal format, centered on a rounded, dark blue-black vase that holds an abundant, spreading bouquet. The vase, set on a tabletop, is decorated with a simple crossed motif in muted brown and gray, and its dark mass anchors the composition at lower center. Above it, the flowers burst outward in all directions: clusters of white daisies with brown centers at the top, coral, vermilion, and salmon blossoms with spiky petals at the center, and broad, sweeping leaves or petals in deep cobalt and ultramarine fanning out to both sides. Small white blossoms dot the blue masses at left, a golden yellow flower and a green leaf appear at right, and a trailing spray of white flowers spills down over the front of the vase. A dotted arc of teal strokes sweeps across the upper left. The background glows in golden yellow, amber, and ochre, darkening toward olive and umber at the edges, while the tabletop is laid in speckled strokes of gold, cream, and rust, with a few fallen petals scattered across it. The bold, simplified forms, heavy application, and intense, non-naturalistic color reflect the visual language of Post-Impressionist still-life painting. The lower left bears a painted inscription reading "P. Gauguin." This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
