Title: Figures in a Rural Gathering Technique: Mixed media on paper Measures: 22.5 x 28 cm (8.9 x 11 inches) Year: Undated Inscription: Bears a “Picasso”-style inscription in the upper-right corner. Condition: Visible surface wear, light handling marks, minor paper toning and areas of uneven pigment consistent with age. Condition should be confirmed through firsthand examination. Provenance: From a private Texas collection. According to family recollection, the work was inherited with a group of European artworks assembled during travels through Paris, France, and Barcelona, Spain, in the 1960s and 1970s. Precise acquisition details and earlier ownership records were not preserved. Visual Description: A gathering of stylized figures occupies an open rural landscape beneath a broad blue-and-gray sky. At left, several standing characters dressed in theatrical and harlequin-inspired clothing form a compact group, while a seated woman in a wide-brimmed hat appears separately in the foreground. Simplified anatomy, dark linear contours and flattened planes of muted blue, red, ochre, gray and green create a distinctly modernist composition. The grouping of performers, expressive distortion and references to circus and theatrical subjects evoke themes frequently associated with Picasso’s figurative work. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
