Title: Bouquet in a Black Vase on a Golden Table Technique: Oil on paper Measures: 8 x 11 inches Year: Undated Condition: Good overall condition. The work keeps bold coloration, thick textured brushwork and clearly defined outlines. The paper shows toning, minor surface wear, small paint losses at the edges, scattered marks and age-related imperfections. The reverse shows show-through of the composition and stamp marks. Presented in a black frame with a beaded silver-toned inner edge. An inscription reading “P Gauguin” appears in the lower-right corner. Provenance: Private collection, Tampa, Florida Visual Description: This vibrant still life presents a lavish bouquet spilling from a round black vase set on a golden-brown tabletop. The arrangement mixes white blossoms outlined in dark blue, coral and salmon star-shaped flowers, and broad cobalt leaves that sweep outward to either side. Accents of red, yellow and small clusters of blue berries animate the upper edges, while slender green stems arc beyond the main mass. The vase is decorated with a pale incised X pattern and a small spray of pale yellow and green flowers at its rim. A warm yellow background glows behind the bouquet, and a dark red band runs along the lower edge of the table. The flattened forms, outlined shapes and saturated, non-naturalistic palette evoke a visual vocabulary associated with Post-Impressionism and late nineteenth-century French painting. This composition reflects stylistic elements commonly associated with major figures in modern and contemporary art.
