AVAILABLE for SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Measuring 48" square, an early handmade white tablecloth featuring linen panels joined by elaborate open lacework with floral embroidery and pierced detailing throughout. The symmetrical design centers on a square panel with broad lace sections extending through the field and around the perimeter. Clearly a handworked textile with considerable craftsmanship and especially well suited for a square dining, accent or occasional table. This style belongs to the long tradition of whitework embroidery, in which white thread is worked on white linen or cotton. Cutwork developed from Renaissance-era Italian whitework, while drawn-thread work removes selected warp and weft threads and binds the remaining threads into decorative open patterns. These techniques were often combined with lace and embroidery in household linens. By the mid-to-late 19th century, whitework had again become a fashionable domestic needlework pursuit among European and American women, and elaborate table linens remained popular into the turn-of-the-century and Edwardian period. The floral motifs, broad openwork borders, scalloped edging and highly decorative arrangement seen here are consistent with the elaborate whitework table-linen tradition associated with the late Victorian and early 20th-century domestic interior, when fine handworked linens were used as visible demonstrations of needlework skill and household refinement. Without a maker, provenance or dated inscription, however, we would not assign an exact production date solely from the technique. CONDITION REPORT > Notably well preserved for age. Stored safely. This textile has not been recently laundered but has no overt odor. Perhaps typical and minor elements relative to age, minimal use and materials.
