AVAILABLE FOR SHIPPING or LOCAL PICKUP > Measuring 70" x 90", this vintage homemade twin-size quilt is a wonderfully expressive example of Southern folk-art quiltmaking. The face is constructed from hundreds of handsewn square patches, combining assorted solid colors with florals, stripes, checks, dots, abstract designs and novelty prints. Turquoise, deep blue, purple, orange, pink, brown, black and white fabrics form shifting clusters across the surface, producing an energetic mosaic without reliance upon a rigidly repeated traditional block pattern. The varied fabrics suggest the resourceful scrap-bag tradition in which available remnants from clothing and household sewing were preserved and incorporated into useful bedcovers. Repeated materials appear at intervals throughout the composition, while occasional contrasting groups create secondary checkerboard and four-patch effects. The irregular distribution of color and pattern gives the quilt a spontaneous, highly individual character characteristic of vernacular Southern textile art. Closely spaced parallel rows of hand stitching secure the layers and remain particularly visible across the reverse. The quilt is backed with pale striped fabric and finished around the perimeter with narrow striped binding. Both decorative and functional, this is a one-of-a-kind handmade textile reflecting thrift, personal expression and the longstanding domestic quiltmaking tradition of the American South.
