Monumental Signed Studio Raku Pottery Vessel

A striking and substantial contemporary studio pottery vessel, hand-thrown and raku-fired, with a beautifully developed surface combining metallic iridescence, dramatic reduction effects and organic earth tones. The monumental ovoid body swells gracefully from a narrow foot before drawing inward toward a broad, slightly recessed charcoal-colored neck and mouth. Dimensions: 24.5 in. H x 17 in. diameter The surface is particularly successful, with broad passages of burnished gold, copper, bronze, russet, smoky graphite and silvery tones merging across the body in an almost abstract landscape. Areas of fine crackle and crazing add considerable depth, while flashes of iridescent blue and violet appear as the vessel is viewed under changing light. The irregularities and spontaneous effects produced during firing give the piece the unmistakable character of individually made studio ceramics rather than commercial production. The vessel appears to bear an incised artist's signature to the body; the signature has not been positively identified. The underside displays extensive firing and reduction characteristics consistent with the raku process. At 24.5 inches high, this is an unusually substantial decorative form with considerable presence. Provenance: From the estate of Moira McCracken, an international equine sales executive based in Georgia and lifelong equestrian with a deep passion for horses and animals. At the time of her passing, she owned four horses and six dogs. McCracken assembled a home filled with beautiful art and distinctive furnishings. She was the widow of John McCracken, who established IBM in Edinburgh, Scotland. Condition: Very good overall condition. Structurally sound with no visible significant cracks or repairs. Surface irregularities, glaze variations, crazing, firing marks and reduction effects are characteristic of the raku process and form an intentional part of the vessel's appearance.
