A red string-bound volume titled THE COLLEGIATE SCIENCE NOTE BOOK contains biology notes for Welland High School, bearing an 1880 copyright by The Chas. Chapman Co. for the Department of Agriculture in Canada. A brown cloth-covered notebook is hand-labeled HIGH SCHOOL Geography. The collection also includes two ledgers: one with a red spine and corners and another with a plain dark cover. The interior pages feature extensive handwritten student notes in cursive ink and pencil covering various academic subjects, including Julius Caesar’s campaigns in Gaul, medieval English history from King Alfred to the Norman Conquest of 1066, biology, and psychological sensation and idea diagrams. The volumes are constructed from a variety of materials including flexible paper, cloth, and stiff boards. Measured against a ruler: Total group width: approx. 52 cm Individual volume height: approx. 20 cm - 26 cm. Condition: The collection shows significant signs of age and use, including fraying at the spines and corners, surface soiling, and foxing throughout. The covers exhibit staining and chipping, particularly to the paper edges of the composition books. Flexible paper and cloth covers show tears, creases, and fading. The interiors remain legible despite general toning, scattered ink blots, and periodic staining to the paper.
