This 1881 edition of A True Friend: Reflections on Life, Character and Conduct is a collected work published by A. J. Campbell in Cleveland, Ohio. The volume is bound in full black pebble-grained leather. The binding features decorative gilt-stamped borders on the front and back covers. The spine is decorated with gilt rules forming six compartments, four of which contain stylized gilt floral ornaments; the remaining compartments contain the gilt-stamped title and the word ILLUSTRATED. The pages have plain edges which show natural age-toning. The interior title page is printed with black typography in various fonts. Dimensions: H approx. 24.1 cm (measured against a tape measure). Condition: The leather binding shows moderate rubbing and scuffing at the extremities, particularly at the corners, joints, and the head and tail of the spine. The gilt stamping on the covers and spine remains largely bright with minor surface wear. Internally, the title page displays significant foxing and peripheral brown staining. The text block edges are toned. The binding remains square and firm.
