This single volume is titled A Popular History of the Dominion of Canada From the Discovery of America to the Present Time, authored by Rev. William H. Withrow, M.A., D.D. The work provides a comprehensive history including the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, British Columbia, and Manitoba, as well as the North-West Territory and the island of Newfoundland. Published in Toronto by William Briggs in 1884, the volume is illustrated with steel portraits, maps, and wood engravings. The book is bound in publisher's brown cloth featuring decorative black and gilt stamping on the front board and spine. A central gilt armorial device is featured on the front board. The spine displays the title and author's name in gilt within decorative panels. Dimensions: H approx. 23.5 cm (measured against a ruler). Condition: The binding exhibits wear consistent with age, including fraying and cloth loss at the head and foot of the spine. The corners are bumped and rubbed with some exposure of the underlying boards. The cloth surfaces show general soiling and minor abrasions. The text block edges are darkened with age. Internally, the pages show moderate foxing and general toning throughout, most notably on the title page and surrounding leaves. The binding remains sound.
