Elegant late 19th-century French Louis XV Revival overmantel mirror, constructed in richly figured walnut with decorative banded and contrasting veneer work following the shaped arched outline of the frame. The broad mirror plate is enclosed by a gracefully serpentine surround with incurved lower shoulders, while the crest is centered by an elaborate gilt-bronze cartouche flanked by scrolling sprays of acanthus and floral foliage, lending the otherwise restrained walnut frame a particularly refined decorative accent. The use of shaped walnut, applied gilt-metal ornament and curvilinear Louis-style vocabulary is consistent with French mirrors produced during the 19th-century revival of 18th-century decorative forms; comparable period examples likewise combine walnut or mahogany surrounds with applied gilt-metal crest ornament. The mirror retains an attractive mellow surface and aged character. Condition includes scattered veneer losses and lifting along the inner curved surround, a visible separation/crack through the upper frame, small edge chips and abrasions, surface wear and oxidation to the gilt-metal crest, and general age-related wear throughout; the mirror plate itself appears substantially intact from the photographs. Measures 21.5"H x 51"W
