A charming and highly decorative pair of early English animal paintings captures a spirited terrier in two lively moments of pursuit, each scene set within a dim rustic stable or barn interior scattered with straw. In one work, the small white terrier lunges forward toward a dark mouse or rat on the floor, its body stretched low with alert, focused energy; in the companion painting, the dog is shown attacking or investigating a wire trap, creating a narrative quality that makes the pair especially engaging. The artist has paid close attention to the dog’s wiry coat, expressive posture, and movement, while the subdued brown and olive-toned interiors provide strong contrast against the light-colored animal. Painted on board and presented as a true companion pair in matching black molded frames with gilt inner liners, the works have an appealing period character and traditional English sporting-animal aesthetic. The paintings appear unsigned. The frames show scuffs, scratches, rubbing, and scattered chips and losses to the painted finish consistent with age and handling. Sights measure 9.5" x 6.25" each. Frames measure 14.5" x 11.25" each.
