A tranquil pastoral lakeside scene unfolds beneath a softly illuminated sky, with a small herd of cattle gathered along the water’s edge while a lone figure rests beneath the shade of a large tree and a distant boatman crosses the calm lake beyond. The composition is especially effective in its sense of depth, moving from the richly textured foreground vegetation and rocky shoreline into the reflective water, wooded opposite bank, and hazy mountain range disappearing into the distance. The artist uses a subdued natural palette of mossy greens, earthy browns, soft blues, creams, and muted rose tones, with carefully placed highlights adding warmth to the foliage, cattle, and shimmering surface of the lake. Brushwork throughout is loose yet descriptive, with heavier texture concentrated in the trees, grasses, and rocky ground, while the open water and distant landscape are handled more softly to create atmospheric recession. The grouping of cattle at lower right provides a strong pastoral focal point, balanced by the seated figure at left and the tiny boat in the distance. Signed “R. Andrews” at the lower right. Presented in a substantial dark-finished molded frame with decorative bronze-toned inner and outer borders. The painting presents well overall; the frame shows scuffs, scratches, rubbing, finish wear, and scattered chips and losses, particularly around the edges and corners, consistent with age and handling. Sight measures 23.5" x 19.5". Frame measures 36" x 32".
