Atmospheric oil on canvas landscape signed C. Soutter at the lower right, depicting a winding dirt road passing through a richly colored autumn woodland beside a calm lake or river. Tall trees with golden yellow, amber, russet, and deep burgundy foliage frame the composition, while luminous light filters through the trees and draws the eye toward distant blue-gray hills. The painting is executed with expressive, heavily textured brushwork and areas of impasto, particularly throughout the foliage, road, grasses, and tree trunks, giving the surface considerable depth and movement. Presented in an ornate bronze and gold-toned molded frame with repeating classical-style decorative borders. The painting has a very small puncture hole near the upper right corner. The frame shows scuffs, scratches, and separation at some joints, with one corner having a visible metal joining piece protruding through the front where the molding meets. The painting also does not sit particularly well within the frame, as the frame is slightly oversized for the canvas. Sight measures 36" x 35.75". Frame measures 42.25" x 42.5".
