George III Inlaid Mahogany Serpentine Knife Box. early 19th century. Of tall serpentine form, veneered in richly figured mahogany and edged with contrasting chequered stringing. The sloping hinged lid opens to the original fitted matrix for knives and other flatware; underside centered by an inlaid eight-point mariner’s star. Silvered-metal escutcheon and shield engraved with a script monogram, apparently ‘JMB.’ Condition: Fitted interior retained, but all cutlery absent. Considerable wear, scratches, fading, staining, shrinkage cracks, and scattered losses to veneer and stringing. Chips and losses around several apertures; some dividers cracked, loose, or incomplete. Losses and separation along lower molding and feet. Hardware tarnished; lock untested and no key shown. Old repairs and possible replaced screws.
