SET OF FIVE METLOX POPPYTRAIL "DEL REY" PLATES - SPECKLED WHITE WITH BLACK LOOPS, TURQUOISE & GRAY DOTS A set of five mid-century California pottery plates in Metlox's hand-painted Poppytrail "Del Rey" pattern, introduced in 1955. Each plate carries a bold ring of black brush-stroked scallop loops around the well, with alternating turquoise-blue and gray oval dots set between the arcs, all on a fine-speckled satin off-white ground. Clean coupe form with a broad flat rim and no gold or busy florals - the kind of graphic 1950s California modern dinnerware that still looks contemporary on the table or displayed on a plate rail. Matches the Del Rey tumblers and cups and saucers offered separately. Sold as a lot of five. Description Form: five matching round plates, coupe-style with a wide sloping rim and low ring foot. Diameter: approximately 9-1/2" across per the tape-measure photos. Decoration: hand-painted band of black scallop loops with alternating turquoise-blue and gray oval dots on a speckled satin white ground; undecorated reverse. Backstamp: marked on the underside in black reading DEL REY / HAND PAINTED / POPPYTRAIL / PAT. PEND. / CALIFORNIA MADE BY METLOX. Bidders should verify dimensions from the photographs. Attribution note Del Rey is catalogued by Replacements as "Blue, Gray Dots, Black Loops" with a production start of 1955. The line was produced under the Poppytrail trade name on Metlox's 4200 shape, identified as Dinnerware Series No. 4200 on an open-stock price list dated January 30, 1956, and described in Metlox's own brochure as a primitive pattern boldly brush-stroked with color" paired with "two-tone turquoise .hollowware. Metlox Potteries operated in Manhattan Beach, California from 1927 until it closed in 1989, with the Poppytrail line introduced in 1934 and named for the California state flower. Individual Del Rey shape numbers and sizes are listed by Metlox California. The pattern name is printed on the backstamp, so the identification is confirmed by the mark itself; the exact catalog size designation is not marked and should be judged from the photographs. Condition Used vintage condition, sold as-is. Please note: one plate has a large chip and glaze loss along the rim edge, roughly 1-1/2" wide with exposed clay body, shown in multiple close-up photographs - please review those images carefully before bidding. The remaining plates show light utensil marking and fine surface scratching in the wells from normal table use, along with scattered small tan or yellow stain spots on the undersides and around the foot rings, visible in the stacked and backstamp photos. Light glaze wear is present at the rims. No cracks are noted. Photos are part of the description.
