SET OF FOUR METLOX POPPYTRAIL "DEL REY" TUMBLERS - SPECKLED WHITE WITH BLACK LOOPS, TURQUOISE & GRAY DOTS A matched set of four mid-century California pottery tumblers in Metlox's Poppytrail "Del Rey" decoration: a speckled satin off-white body banded near the rim with bold hand-brushed black scallop loops, each loop topped by an alternating turquoise-blue and gray dot. The interiors are a soft gray-green speckled glaze. The form is the tall, straight, handle-free 1950s cooler shape - no handles, no foot, just a clean tapered cylinder - a striking piece of 1955-era California modern that displays beautifully as a group. Excellent for iced tea, water, juice, or cocktails, or as pencil cups, brush cups, or small bud vases. Sold as a lot of four. Description Form: four matching tall cylindrical tumblers with slightly tapered rounded bases and no handles, in the mid-century "cooler" or highball profile. Height: approximately 6-1/4" tall per the tape-measure photos. Rim diameter: approximately 2-3/4" to 3" across per the tape-measure photos. Decoration: hand-painted band of black scallop loops with alternating turquoise-blue and gray oval dots on a fine-speckled satin white ground; gray-green speckled satin interiors. Backstamp: marked on the underside in a black circular stamp reading POPPYTRAIL / BY / METLOX / MADE IN CALIFORNIA, with a hand-inscribed 4 beside the stamp. Bidders should verify dimensions from the photographs. Attribution note The black-loop-with-blue-and-gray-dot decoration is Metlox's Del Rey pattern, catalogued by Replacements as "Blue, Gray Dots, Black Loops" and dated to 1955 in the Del Rey by Metlox pattern listing. Del Rey was produced under the Poppytrail trade name on Metlox's 4200 shape, identified as Dinnerware Series No. 4200 on an open-stock price list dated January 30, 1956, and described in the company's own brochure as "a primitive pattern boldly brush-stroked with color" paired with "two-tone turquoise hollowware," per this Metlox Del Rey overview. Metlox Potteries operated in Manhattan Beach, California from 1927 until its closure in 1989, with Poppytrail introduced in 1934 and named for the state flower. Shape numbers for individual Del Rey pieces are listed by Metlox California. The backstamp names Poppytrail and Metlox but not the pattern, so the Del Rey identification is offered as the photo-based opinion of the consignor and is not guaranteed. Condition Used vintage condition, sold as-is. Please note: one tumbler shows a small chip or glaze flake to the rim edge, shown in close-up in the photographs. All four show light glaze wear and fine surface scratching consistent with age and normal table use, and there is minor tan discoloration and staining around the unglazed base edges, visible in the backstamp close-ups. The hand-painted decoration remains bright and well defined with no significant paint loss noted. No cracks are observed, but bidders should study every photograph closely and ask question
