25-Character Title 4 Metlox Freeform Bowls (23) Alternates: 4 Poppytrail Lug Bowls (22) Metlox Poppytrail 4 Bowl (24) 4 MCM Metlox Lug Bowls (22) HiBid Description SET OF FOUR MID-CENTURY METLOX POPPYTRAIL FREEFORM LUG BOWLS - TURQUOISE & SPECKLED WHITE A set of four mid-century modern California pottery bowls in the classic Metlox Poppytrail two-tone treatment: a soft satin turquoise-blue interior against a speckled off-white satin exterior. Each bowl is an organic freeform "boat" shape with a gently swept upturned lug or tab at one end, giving the little asymmetric silhouette that makes 1950s California dinnerware so collectible. Excellent as soup, cereal, salad, dessert, or fruit bowls, as chip-and-dip or condiment servers, or simply grouped on a shelf or table as decorative mid-century accents. Sold as a lot of four. Description Form: four matching freeform organic bowls, wide and shallow with a low coupe profile, each with a single upswept pointed lug at one end and a low unglazed-edged ring foot. Length: approximately 7-1/2" including the lug per the tape-measure photos. Width: approximately 6-1/2" across at the widest point per the tape-measure photos. Height: approximately 2" tall per the tape-measure photos. Glaze: satin turquoise-blue interior, speckled cream/off-white satin exterior with fine dark specks throughout the body. Backstamp: each bowl is marked on the underside in a black circular stamp reading POPPYTRAIL / BY / METLOX / MADE IN CALIFORNIA. Bidders should verify dimensions from the photographs. Attribution note Poppytrail was the primary dinnerware trade name of Metlox Potteries of Manhattan Beach, California, a firm that began in 1927 producing outdoor neon signs and shifted to dinnerware and art pottery in the 1930s, continuing until its 1989 closure (Metlox Pottery). The turquoise-and-speckled-white palette and swept freeform shapes seen here belong to Metlox's mid-1950s California modern lines. Condition Used vintage condition, sold as-is. Please note: one bowl has a chip/flake to the rim near the lug, shown in close-up in the photographs. All four bowls show utensil marking and fine scratching in the turquoise interiors from normal table use - visible in the overhead photos and typical of satin-glaze dinnerware of this age - along with light glaze wear and minor discoloration or staining spots around the foot rings and backstamps. No cracks or crazing lines are noted, but bidders should examine every photograph carefully and ask questions before bidding. Photos are part of the description. Notes for bidders Hand wash recommended to preserve the satin glaze; avoid harsh abrasives, prolonged soaking, and dishwasher detergents.
