Artist Biography Marcel Bloch (1882–1966) was a French painter, illustrator and printmaker particularly associated with Belle Époque and early twentieth-century Parisian genre subjects. He became known for depictions of fashionable women, theatrical performers, dancers and scenes inspired by the vibrant entertainment culture of Paris. Bloch's imagery frequently draws upon the world of cabarets, music halls and fashionable Parisian nightlife, making the present pair particularly representative of the subject matter for which his work is collected. His paintings and illustrations characteristically combine elegant draughtsmanship with an expressive, fluid handling of costume and movement. Female figures, dancers and theatrical personalities feature prominently throughout his oeuvre, often rendered with the sophisticated and slightly playful character associated with French illustration of the period.
