The vessel is rendered as a powerful dark silhouette, its towering sails and rigging emerging through strongly contrasting horizontal linear passages suggesting sky, water and reflected light. Artist Biography Charles Goldhamer (1903–1985) was a respected Canadian painter, printmaker, draftsman, educator and Official War Artist. Born in Philadelphia, Goldhamer was brought to Canada as a child and was raised in Ontario. He studied at the Ontario College of Art from 1922 to 1926, where his instructors included Group of Seven member Arthur Lismer. Goldhamer subsequently taught at the Ontario College of Art and enjoyed a lengthy career at Toronto's Central Technical School, eventually serving as chairman of its Art Department. An accomplished printmaker as well as painter and watercolourist, Goldhamer produced woodcuts and other graphic works characterized by strong design, expressive line and pronounced contrasts of light and dark. During the Second World War, Goldhamer served as an Official Canadian War Artist. His wartime work included an important series documenting severely burned Canadian airmen undergoing treatment in England. Goldhamer's works are held in major Canadian institutional collections, and he remains recognized for his contribution to Canadian art both as a practicing artist and influential educator.
