Gates” lower left Provenance/Documentation: Period biographical newspaper clippings affixed verso, including Detroit News Pictorial, July 8, 1945 An appealing original Michigan landscape by Edwin A. Gates, depicting a quiet country road winding past a white farmhouse and open fields beneath an atmospheric sky. Autumnal browns, muted greens and soft blue-grey tones are punctuated by Gates' characteristic highlights, giving the foliage and landscape a lively, almost luminous quality. Artist Biography Edwin A. Gates (1875–1950) was an American landscape painter associated with Detroit, Michigan. The period newspaper material retained with this painting provides unusually useful contemporary documentation of his career.According to the 1945 Detroit News Pictorial article attached verso, Gates had by that point spent approximately 40 years producing paintings for the public, with the article reporting an extraordinary lifetime output approaching 200,000 works. It further states that at the height of his production he could produce approximately 6,000 pictures annually. Gates specialized primarily in watercolour and pastel landscapes, favouring accessible rural and pastoral subjects. The newspaper account notes that much of his production was purchased by large commercial firms and distributed throughout the United States.His obituary records his Detroit address as 8088 Continental Avenue and notes that he continued working despite illness, completing his final painting only four days before his death.
