Brigden uses the reflective surface of the water as the central organizing element, leading the eye from the rocky foreground toward the sunlit clearing and distant foliage. Artist Biography Frederick Henry Brigden, OSA, RCA (1871–1956) was a prominent Canadian painter, watercolourist, illustrator and commercial artist whose career spanned more than six decades. Born in London, England, Brigden immigrated to Canada with his family while still an infant and grew up in Toronto. Showing artistic ability from an early age, he studied with William Cruikshank and George Agnew Reid through the Toronto Art Students' League. He later spent a summer studying at John F. Carlson's School in the Catskills in 1910. Brigden became closely connected with Toronto's artistic community and associated with artists including J.E.H. MacDonald, Robert Holmes and A.H. Robson. His professional career combined fine art with illustration and commercial design, an important intersection in the development of Canadian visual culture during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He became particularly respected for his watercolours, producing landscapes throughout Ontario and elsewhere in Canada. Streams, rivers, wooded valleys, mountain scenery and rural landscapes recur frequently throughout his work. His watercolours are admired for their confident brushwork, sophisticated handling of transparent washes and ability to capture changing atmospheric and seasonal effects. Brigden was active in major Canadian arts organizations and held memberships in the Ontario Society of Artists (OSA) and Royal Canadian Academy of Arts (RCA). His long association with Canadian watercolour painting places him among the accomplished professional landscape artists working alongside the generation that witnessed the emergence of the Group of Seven.
