Decoy. Oscar W. Peterson (1887-1951) Cadillac, MI c.1920's 9" long | 1.125" wide | 1.625" tall Excellent large body carved eye sucker likely dating to the early 1920's. Deeply carved eyes and cut gill. The thick vibrant paint remains in excellent condition. A very rare example in both size and condition. Peterson was a highly influential American folk artist renowned for his captivating fish decoys and carvings. Peterson's unique carving and painting style, which influenced numerous regional carvers, is now recognized as the "Cadillac style". His work is highly regarded and is held in numerous major private collections as well as in prestigious institutions like the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Brooklyn Museum.Condition: Entirely original in strong paint. Dent in upper left side. Minimal wood wear loss and paint loss to tail. Even paint loss to metal fins. Paint loss to bottom weights with paint loss around mouth.
