The painted surface presents strong red, blue, white, black, and gray passages with clearly defined linear elements. Minor surface irregularities and wear consistent with the overall presentation may be present. The work is presented in an ornate gilt frame. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description. Provenance: From a private collection. The reverse bears a label reading “Galerie Louis Carré, 10 Avenue de Messine, Paris – France.” The label identifies the work as “Jean Dubuffet (1901–1985), Self portrait,” states that it is signed and dated “J. Dubuffet” lower right, describes the medium as oil on canvas, gives dimensions of 31½ × 23½ inches (80 × 60 cm), and states “Painted in 1945.” The label is reported solely as a physical feature appearing on the reverse and is not presented as independent authentication or confirmation that the work was handled by Galerie Louis Carré. Visual Description: A highly stylized frontal portrait constructed through bold black contours and flattened areas of red, blue, white, and gray. The face is fragmented into irregular geometric sections, with asymmetrical eyes, striped passages, and simplified features. The sitter's clothing continues the strong linear vocabulary through contrasting blocks and stripes, creating an intentionally unconventional and expressive interpretation of portraiture.
