The painted surface presents strong, saturated passages of red, blue, black, white, yellow, and brown, with vigorous brushwork, drawn elements, lettering, crowns, and repeated figurative motifs. Areas of surface texture and irregularities appear consistent with the expressive execution and overall presentation of the work. Presented in a black frame. Provenance: The reverse bears a Gagosian Gallery label with the address 980 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10021. The label identifies the work as “Jean-Michel Basquiat, Untitled,” acrylic on canvas, measuring 31½ × 23½ inches (80 × 60 cm), and states that it was executed in 1982. The address appearing on the label corresponds to Gagosian’s historic Madison Avenue location. Gagosian’s own archives document exhibitions involving works by Jean-Michel Basquiat at 980 Madison Avenue, including Andy Warhol & Jean-Michel Basquiat: Collaborations in 1997 and Portraits Obscured in 1998. Visual Description: A densely layered Neo-Expressionist composition organized around crown imagery, roughly articulated human figures, fragmented text, repeated words, and graphic symbols.
