R Serial # 46053. .45 Colt caliber double action revolver with a 6” barrel. The bore is fair, mostly clean with good rifling with light pitting. The revolver was made for the Philippine Constabulary, the US administered police force. The revolver was ordered in .45 Colt to address the shortcomings of the .38 Colt handguns in service at that time. Colt made 4600 revolvers in 1902 based on the 1878 Double Action revolver but with a few significant differences such as the .45 Colt chambering, a 6” barrel, a stiffer hammer spring, a longer trigger and a larger trigger guard. The revolvers were US marked and dated 1902. This revolver has R.A.C. (Rinaldo A. Carr) inspectors marks and well as J.T.T. (John Taliaferro Thompson) inspectors marks. Thompson was the US Army Inspector of Pistols from 1901-1903 who later went on to invent the Thompson Sub-M7achine gun. The metal finish on the barrel is a worn gray patina with patches of brown patina along with older cleaned rust. The markings are visible. The metal finish on the 6 shot fluted cylinder is a worn gray patina as well with scattered spots of older cleaned rust. The cylinder is matched to the frame as is the loading gate. The metal finish on the frame is a worn gray patina with edge wear, dings and scratches. The Rampant Colt is visible on the left side of the frame at the lower rear. The smooth wood military grips are in very good to excellent condition showing light wear. The lanyard ring is present. The action works fine. C&R
