A silver India General Service Medal (1854) awarded for military service during the mid-to-late 19th century. This example features a single silver clasp inscribed PERSIA, which was granted for service during the Anglo-Persian War between December 1856 and April 1857. The obverse features the diademed head of a young Queen Victoria facing left, surrounded by the legend VICTORIA REGINA, with the designer's mark W. WYON R.A. incised at the base of the neck. The reverse depicts a winged figure of Victory crowning a seated warrior holding a sword, signed L.C. WYON in the exergue. The medal is fitted with an ornate swivel scroll suspension. The edge is impressed with the recipient's details: A. GRAY, 78TH HIGH. (78th Highlanders, Ross-shire Buffs). The medal is accompanied by a silk ribbon with three vertical stripes, comprising two red stripes flanking a central dark blue stripe. Diameter approx. 3.6 cm Overall length approx. 8.9 cm. Condition: The silver medal shows an aged dark patina across both faces and the clasp, with minor surface scratches and contact marks consistent with age and use. The swivel suspension is intact and functional. The silk ribbon is present but exhibits significant wear, fraying, and loss of fabric at the top edge.
